COVID19 and the UK IPO

The UK Intellectual Property Office (“UK IPO”) is the central registry in the UK responsible for dealing with trade mark, design right and patent applications.

The UK IPO has confirmed in a recent update that examination reports for UK trade mark applications will now be delayed as a result of the COVID19 outbreak. The UK IPO generally provides trade mark examination reports within 2 months of the date the applicant files the relevant trade mark application. This period has now been extended to 4 months to factor in delays which may be caused by reduced office hours and remote working by examiners.

The UK IPO has also urged applicants responding to examination and hearing reports to use the reply button in the report.
