COVID19 and Data Protection

8th April 2020

The Information Commissioner’s Office (“ICO”) have issued a statement regarding the recent COVID19 outbreak and the impact on the UK’s data protection regime.

Many businesses may be required to spend the majority of their time dealing with the consequences of the pandemic and may fail to meet the standard imposed by GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018. The statement provides practical information on the ICO’s approach to data protection enforcement during the pandemic.

The statement is also useful for businesses who are considering sharing personal data relating to employees who may be infected by COVID19. It also provides useful information regarding security measures which can be taken when employees are working from home.

The full statement can be viewed at https://ico.org.uk/for-organisations/data-protection-and-coronavirus/.
