In the summer of 2016, Emily and Dave Thomas were looking for the ideal business to put their combined skills to good use. When the opportunity to buy the freehold of Wavecrest Café located in a designated area of outstanding natural beauty at the most southerly point in mainland Britain arose, they leapt at the chance. Emily and Dave had lived in Cornwall since 2005 and previously, Dave had worked as a marketing consultant and Emily as a project manager.
Built in 1927 and situated on the cliffs at Lizard Point, the Wavecrest Café has spectacular panoramic coastal views. However, the property and business were very run down and in need of a full renovation by the time Dave and Emily were looking to buy them in 2016, having been neglected for some time.
During the winter of 2016, Wavecrest was treated to a long overdue restoration, bringing life back to the building which had been ravaged by nature over the years. Using traditional, sustainable materials and local craftsmen, Wavecrest was restored to its former glory, updating its facilities to modern standards whilst carefully retaining its original character. Dave and Emily developed a delicious menu which focused on using locally sourced ingredients wherever possible to create a truly Cornish experience. Since reopening in spring 2017, the café has gone from strength to strength receiving rave reviews from customers and the media. Wavecrest is now in the top 15 cafes in Cornwall on TripAdvisor and was recently named in the Telegraph’s ‘The Best Cream Teas in Cornwall’ feature.
Dave and Emily said: “Having the opportunity to renovate and rebrand businesses has always been a dream for us and when the chance came up for us to buy the freehold of the Wavecrest Café in 2016, we knew we had to take this once in a lifetime opportunity.
We chose to instruct Murrell Associates to act for us on the purchase in 2016 because of their local expertise and practical advice. The service we have received from Jenny and Caroline both then and in the intervening years has been second to none and we can’t speak highly enough of them.
Restoring the café and getting the business off the ground has been hard work, but we are so proud of what we have built here at the Wavecrest Café.”
The Wavecrest Café reopened following further renovations on 1st February 2020. For more information about the Wavecrest Café visit www.wavecrestcornwall.co.uk
